When every weight matches, weighting changes nothing — that's just the mean. If your entries all carry the same weight, any difference you expected is coming from somewhere else.
A zero in a 40-weight item drags the average harder than four zeros in 5-weight items. The stacked bar makes these dominant items easy to spot before they surprise you — if one segment fills a third of the bar, that item deserves a third of your attention, and a missing score there is never just one assignment.

A weighted grade calculator computes the average where each score is multiplied by its own weight first. That one change is why a 95 on homework can matter less than a 78 on a midterm: weight, not effort, decides each score's pull on the result.

Weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)Example: (92×20 + 84×30 + 78×50) ÷ (20+30+50) = 82.6. Works identically for credits, points, or percentages.
Multiply each score by its weight, add everything, divide by the total weight. Scores 92, 84, and 78 at weights 20, 30, and 50 give (92×20 + 84×30 + 78×50) ÷ 100 = 82.6%. Change that 50-weight score by five points and the average moves 2.5; change the 20-weight score the same amount and it moves 1.
Weights don't need to be percentages. Course credits, category points, or plain ratios all work, because the math only cares about proportion — 3-2-1 weighs exactly like 50/33/17. Enter them as they're written and let the normalization handle the rest.
